Image Name: TikTok’s “Sleepy Girl Mocktail”

You might discover the answer to a decent night’s sleep in an unlikely place: TikHub. The Sleepy Girl Mocktail, a beverage many users say helps them get a more peaceful slumber, has lately gained popularity on the site Combining magnesium, acidic cherry juice, and usually a seltzer or soda like OLIPOP—which has plant fiber and prebiotics—this natural sleep aid helps. Inspired by a post by March 2023 TikHub creator Gracie Norton, this mix has been rather popular with the hashtag #Sleepygirlmocktail garnering millions of views.

Why Does the Sleepy Girl Mocktail Work?
One of the main components in this mocktail, magnesium is well-known for raising melatonin levels, a hormone naturally controlling your sleep pattern. Magnesium also regulates the nervous system and serves as a muscle relaxant, raising GABA levels—a neurotransmitter that aids in brain stress and anxiety prevention. Consultant nutritionist Sophie Medlin says those without enough magnesium would benefit most from this drink. Studies confirm how well magnesium helps with sleep. A 2017 analysis of 26 studies revealed a positive correlation between enough magnesium intake and better length of sleep.

Still another vital ingredient is tart cherry juice. Cherries have significant tryptophan, serotonin, and antioxidant contents as well as melatonin. These chemicals are well-known to lower oxidative damage and enhance the quality of sleep. Registered dietitian Dr. Laura Wyness notes that meals high in melatonin, such sour cherries, could aid with sleeplessness.

The Function of Plant Fibers and Prebiotics
Although sodas and seltzers are not usually linked with health advantages, adding a prebiotic soda with plant fibers to the Sleepy Girl Mocktail could offer extra sleep benefits. Anxiety and stress connected to poor gut health might affect sleep adversely. Prebiotics and plant fibers enable gut bacteria generate important hormones and neurotransmitters linked to sleep, therefore supporting normal gut function.

Like the Mediterranean diet, a 2020 review revealed that a diet high in plant fiber and prebiotics helps gut flora in creating healthy fatty acids and bacteria, so possibly enhancing sleep.

Does the Sleepy Girl Mocktail truly work?
Though popular, opinions on the Sleepy Girl Mocktail’s efficacy vary among specialists. Although some people might feel a change, Sophie Medlin notes this could be related to the placebo effect. Perhaps your sleep quality will be improved just by believing the drink would enable you to fall asleep more easily.

Dr. Laura Wyness notes that several elements affect the quality of sleep, including activity level, stress, surroundings, hydration, and general diet. Thus, depending just on one drink to fix sleep problems might not be reasonable.

Image Name: Sleepy Girl Mocktail’s efficacy

Possible Health Concerns
Though the Sleepy Girl Mocktail is unlikely to be harmful, there are a few things to bear in mind. Too much liquid before bed could cause midnight potty trips, therefore upsetting your sleep. Wyness counsels front-loading your water earlier in the day and weaning off as evening falls.

Also crucial is the kind of magnesium you use. Whereas magnesium citrate has a laxative impact, magnesium glycinate is well-known for its relaxing qualities. Diarrhea can result when ingesting more than 400 mg of magnesium quickly. Besides, some people may have unrest from the sugar in tart cherry juice. Including fiber such as guar gum or psyllium husk will assist to slow down sugar absorption.

If you take medications, see your doctor before including magnesium into your regimen. People with blood glucose control problems, such PCOS or diabetes, may wish to restrict the juice and concentrate just on magnesium.

Investigating Other Natural Sleep Aid Solutions
Should the Sleepy Girl Mocktail not appeal to you, there are plenty of additional natural sleep aids to take under review. Most of sleep is about habit and relaxation. Important first stages include making sure you have a regular sleep pattern, cut screen time before bed, and develop a soothing evening ritual.

Magnesium supplements—especially magnesium bis-glycinate—may help with sleep. Another consideration is CBD drops. Additionally helpful are nighttime teas including L-theanine, an amino acid with soothing effects.

Good sleeping depends on enough vitamin D. Nine research taken together revealed that those with low vitamin D levels often sleep less and have worse quality of sleep. Vitamin D supplements have been demonstrated to help those with sleep problems.

Conclusion
Although the Sleepy Girl Mocktail is becoming more and more well-known on TikHub as a natural sleep aid, its efficacy will differ depending on person. The components of the drink—especially magnesium and tart cherry juice—do have qualities that can help one sleep better. But numerous elements affect sleep quality, hence depending just on a mocktail could not be the best answer.

If you choose to sample the Sleepy Girl Mocktail, consumed in moderation it is unlikely to cause damage. Remember to take other natural sleep aids into account and concentrate on developing a peaceful evening ritual to raise your general sleeping quality.

Cover: Fiber-Rich Fermented Foods for Wellness

In the world of nutrition, fiber and fermented foods are two ingredients that consistently earn high praise. These dietary powerhouses are essential for maintaining healthy digestion and offer a range of additional health benefits. But how can you easily incorporate more fiber and fermented foods into your meals, and why should you?

The Role of Fiber and Fermented Foods in Gut Health
Your gut microbiome, composed of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms, plays a crucial role in your overall health. It impacts everything from your immune system to your mood. What you eat, along with other factors like the air you breathe and where you live, influences the health of your gut microbiome.

A healthy diet low in processed foods is vital for a balanced gut microbiome. Increasing evidence suggests that fiber and fermented foods can significantly contribute to gut health and overall well-being.

Understanding Fiber
Fiber is crucial for smooth digestion. It helps to soften and bulk up stool, making it easier to pass through your intestines. But fiber’s benefits extend beyond just aiding digestion. A diet rich in fiber can help control body weight and lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Research has shown that adequate fiber intake is linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers.

Types of Fiber
There are two main types of fiber:

Insoluble Fiber: This type adds bulk to your stool and helps maintain regular bowel movements.

Soluble Fiber: This type helps lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Recent research suggests focusing on the total amount of fiber in your diet rather than the specific types.

How Much Fiber Do You Need?
A good rule of thumb is to consume 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories you eat. Instead of counting daily fiber intake, aim to include more fiber-rich foods in your diet.

High-Fiber Foods
Incorporate these fiber-rich foods into your meals:

Fruits: Apples, pears, berries

Vegetables: Carrots, broccoli, leafy greens

Legumes: Beans, lentils, chickpeas

Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, chia seeds, flaxseeds

Whole Grains: Oats, brown rice, quinoa

Over-the-counter fiber supplements like capsules or powders can help if you struggle to get enough fiber from food. However, they should not be your primary source of fiber.

The Benefits of Fermented Foods
Fermented foods are another key player in maintaining gut health. They contain both prebiotics and probiotics. Prebiotics are ingredients that promote healthy changes in the microbiome, while probiotics are live bacteria that help maintain a healthy gut.

Fermentation Process
Fermented foods undergo a process called lacto-fermentation, where natural bacteria feed on sugars and starches, creating lactic acid. This process not only removes simple sugars but also introduces beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Some fermented foods, like beer or wine, may not retain these beneficial microbes due to processing methods.

Inside: Fiber and Fermentation Benefits

Nutritional Benefits of Fermented Foods
Besides aiding digestion and nutrient absorption, fermented foods can support your immune system and protect against inflammation. Some studies suggest that probiotics may help alleviate symptoms of gut-related conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), though opinions on this vary.

Incorporating Fermented Foods into Your Diet
There is no set daily amount for prebiotics or probiotics, but the general advice is to include them regularly in your diet. Here are some popular fermented foods:

Yogurt: Look for labels that say “live and active cultures.”

Kimchi: A spicy Korean side dish made from fermented vegetables.

Sauerkraut: Fermented cabbage that’s rich in probiotics.

Kombucha: A fermented tea that can be a refreshing drink option.

Pickles: Ensure they are naturally fermented and not just pickled with vinegar.

While probiotics are also available in supplement form, it’s best to obtain them from fermented foods. Supplements are not regulated by the FDA, so there’s no guarantee they contain the beneficial bacteria listed on their labels.

Combining Fiber and Fermented Foods
Incorporating both fiber and fermented foods into your meals can have synergistic effects on your health. Here are some tips for adding them to your diet:

Start Slowly: When increasing fiber intake, do so gradually to avoid digestive discomfort. Drink plenty of water to help your body adjust.

Mix It Up: Include a variety of fiber-rich foods in your meals. For example, add fruits and vegetables to your salads, and choose whole grains over refined ones.

Include Fermented Foods: Add a serving of yogurt or sauerkraut to your meals, or enjoy a glass of kombucha as a beverage.

Choosing Quality SupplementsIf you do choose to use supplements, look for products with minimal additives. For optimal health, select supplements that contain complementary nutrients like:

Vitamin B12: Essential for healthy nerve cells and cognitive function.

Vitamin D3: Supports mood regulation and overall health.

Magnesium: Helps with relaxation and supports neurological function.

Always consult a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement, especially if you are on medication or pregnant.

Conclusion
Incorporating more fiber and fermented foods into your diet can significantly enhance your gut health and overall well-being. By making these nutritious additions to your meals, you can enjoy better digestion, improved mood, and a healthier gut microbiome. Whether you choose to eat more fiber-rich foods, add fermented options to your diet, or use supplements wisely, you’ll be supporting your body’s natural balance and health.

The world of wellness and beauty is constantly changing, and it can be difficult to keep up with the latest trends and innovations that are making waves in the industry. On the other hand, it is important to be attentive when there is a convergence of scientific support and professional endorsements. We are introducing a spice that is not only making a name for itself in the kitchen but also attracting considerable attention in various fields of health and skincare, and you won’t believe what it is, its saffron. Adding saffron to our food is considered a good step to wellness. So let’s see how this saffron helps us with our health and skincare.

The Rich History of Saffron
Derived from the stigmas of the Crocus sativus flower, Saffron is noted for its unique taste and striking color. Although its culinary applications are well-known, its therapeutic advantages have long been acknowledged—particularly in Ayurvedic systems of traditional medicine. From its bioactive compounds—crocin, safranal, and picrocrocin—each of which adds uniquely to health and well-being—Saffron’s potent antioxidant qualities result.

Why Nutritionists Are Buzzing About Saffron
Saffron is gaining popularity in the wellness world due to its potential mood-enhancing properties. According to Maz Packham, a nutritional therapist at W-Wellness, saffron is becoming an increasingly popular component in dietary supplements that are offered with the intention of enhancing emotional well-being and providing support for the neurological system. “Saffron’s benefits extend to helping manage symptoms of PMT and menopause by addressing hormonal imbalances,” Packham writes in her article.

Saffron is also getting interest for its potential to manage symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and to improve the quality of sleep. The natural and scientifically supported advantages of saffron are a welcome complement to many different health routines. This is especially true in urban locations such as London, where stress, burnout, and insomnia are becoming increasingly prevalent over time.

How Saffron Enhances Your Health

Boosts Mood and Emotional Well-Being
Especially remarkable are Saffron’s effects on neurotransmitters. Studies on saffron supplements have found that they increase dopamine and serotonin levels, substances in the brain linked with joy and happiness. Saffron also raises GABA levels, which helps to relax the brain and might improve the quality of sleep and lower anxiety. In the highly stressed environment of today, these benefits are extremely important.

Supports Hormonal Balance
For women, saffron’s ability to balance hormones is really important. It is demonstrated to help control mood swings and ease PMS symptoms. Furthermore helping to preserve general hormonal health are its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities. Including saffron into your regimen might help you with PMS or menopause.

Helps with Weight Management
Saffron may help people who are trying to lose weight because it can make you feel full and keep your blood sugar levels in check. Saffron can help you stay at a healthy weight by reducing your hunger and keeping your blood sugar stable.

Inside: The Origins of Saffron

Choosing the Right Saffron Supplement
When it comes to saffron supplements, it’s crucial to choose products of the utmost quality to guarantee you experience all the advantages. Here’s some important information:

Optimal Form and Dosage
Saffron is most powerful when taken bioactive or liposomal form. For best impact, these substances— safranal, crocin, picrocrocin—are readily absorbed into the bloodstream. It is advised to take a daily dosage of around 30mg if one wants obvious impacts on mood and general well-being.

Complementary Nutrients
To maximize the benefits of saffron, consider choosing supplements that contain complementary nutrients. Take note of the importance of Vitamin B12 for maintaining healthy nerves and cognitive function. Supporting mood regulation and immunity, Vitamin D3 and magnesium can help manage stress and promote relaxation. By incorporating saffron into your routine, you can take a holistic approach to your well-being.

Quality and Purity
In the process of selecting a supplement, it is recommended to look for goods that include a low amount of bulking agents or chemicals. The quantity of components contained within the supplement is what establishes its level of quality. It is important to conduct research and choose brands that place an emphasis on both purity and effectiveness.

Top Saffron Supplements to Consider

Saffron Bioactive by Natroceutics
The most researched form of saffron, known as affron, is available from Natroceutics. The ideal proportion of saffron’s bioactive ingredients is provided by this product, which guarantees that you will experience the full range of benefits in its entirety.

Saffronsun Calm by The Naked Pharmacy
This supplement contains 30mg of saffron per dose, targeting mood, fatigue, sleep issues, and menopausal symptoms. It’s vegan and sustainably sourced, making it a great choice for those seeking a high-quality saffron supplement.

Hifas de Terra
Hifas de Terra combines saffron with medicinal mushrooms like cordyceps and reishi to support mood, vitality, and overall well-being. This all-rounder is ideal for those needing broad support alongside improved mood.

Things to Consider Before Adding Saffron to Your Routine
Before introducing saffron into your wellness regimen, consult with a healthcare professional, especially if you’re on medication or have specific health concerns. Saffron is generally safe but may interact with certain medications. It’s also advised to avoid saffron during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless cleared by a doctor.

Conclusion
Saffron is not just a beautiful spice with culinary appeal; it’s a powerhouse of potential health benefits. From enhancing mood and emotional balance to supporting hormonal health and weight management, saffron is gaining recognition as a valuable addition to both dietary supplements and skincare routines. By choosing high-quality supplements and combining saffron with complementary nutrients, you can harness its full benefits and support your overall well-being in a natural, effective way.

As summer approaches, the focus often shifts to achieving the perfect “beach body,” a concept rooted in the outdated notion that short-term efforts can transform your appearance. Thankfully, the narrative has evolved, embracing body positivity and self-care over fleeting perfection. If you’re ready to step into the sun with confidence, focusing on a solid summer skincare routine is essential. Treat your body’s skin with the same care you give your face. Here’s how to achieve radiant, healthy skin this summer.

Essential Summer Body Skincare Routines

Prime and Hydrate
Start by exfoliating your skin two to three times a week. This helps remove dead skin cells and promotes smoother, more radiant skin. Use a body brush before your shower and follow up with a body scrub for a thorough cleanse. Exfoliation not only brightens your skin but also ensures that moisturizers and treatments penetrate effectively.

After exfoliation, apply a moisturizer suited to your skin’s needs. During the warmer months, you might prefer a lighter formula to avoid exacerbating sweating. For areas like your knees and elbows, a buttery formula can provide additional moisture where it’s needed most.

Zone Your Body for Better Results
Your skin’s needs vary across different areas of your body. 96% of your skin is below the surface, meaning the anatomy and needs of your skin vary by location. Pay extra attention to:

The neck and backs of the hands, where the skin is thinner.
The V of your chest and back, where skin is thicker and more sebaceous.

To prevent areas from becoming crepey or spotty, tailor your skincare routine to address specific concerns. For example, areas prone to dryness might benefit from products rich in hydrating ingredients.

Inisde: The Essentials of Skincare

Adjust Ingredients to Address Specific Concerns
For dry skin, look for products with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, shea butter, amino acids, or panthenol. These ingredients help lock in moisture and soothe dryness. If your skin is crepey, consider products with peptides, retinol, and vitamin C to improve elasticity and texture. For acne-prone skin, a product like Clinisoothe, which utilizes hypochlorous acid, can reduce inflammation and bacterial growth. This is particularly useful for managing body acne.

Address specific complaints like Keratosis Pilaris (KP) with specialized products such as those from Ameliorate. These products target the small bumps commonly found on the backs of arms and legs.

Must-Have Products for Your Summer Skincare Routine

First Aid Beauty KP Bump Eraser Body Scrub with 10% AHA
This powerful scrub is enhanced with AHAs to effectively exfoliate and smooth the skin. Avoid using it on broken or sunburned skin, but it’s ideal for maintaining healthy skin on other areas.

Ameliorate Nourishing Body Wash
Perfect for addressing scaly patches, excessive dryness, and KP bumps, this body wash helps improve skin texture and moisture levels. It’s a gentle yet effective option for daily use.

Joonbryd Daydreamer Body Serum
Joonbryd is renowned for its luxurious body care products. This serum, though a bit pricey, is an investment in your skin’s health. It offers significant benefits in hydration and radiance, making it a top choice for those seeking noticeable results.

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula
A timeless favorite, Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula harnesses the softening power of cocoa butter to make your skin silky smooth. It’s a reliable choice for moisturizing and smoothing dry or rough patches.

Cellcosmet Celllift Serum
This serum combines peptides and hyaluronic acid to provide both immediate and long-term skin benefits. It enhances hydration, radiance, and elasticity, making it a valuable addition to your skincare arsenal.

Additional Tips for Protecting Your Skin
Develop a comprehensive hot weather plan to protect your skin from the sun’s harsh effects. Sunscreen is crucial, but it’s just one component of effective sun protection. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can affect your skin.

Practical Sun Protection Tips:
Wear broad-brimmed hats and lightweight, long-sleeved clothing with a UV Protection Factor (UPF) rating of 50 for maximum protection.

Seek shade during peak UV hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher at least 15 minutes before sun exposure.

Reapply sunscreen every two hours, and more frequently if swimming or sweating.

Protect your eyes with sunglasses and use lip balm with SPF 30 or higher.

Avoid indoor tanning beds, which can exacerbate skin damage and increase your risk of sunburn.

Conclusion
Embrace the summer with confidence by prioritizing your body’s skincare needs. Prime, hydrate, and tailor your routine to address specific skin concerns. Incorporate must-have products like exfoliators, moisturizers, and specialized serums to maintain smooth, radiant skin. Combine these with effective sun protection strategies to safeguard your skin from damage and enjoy a healthy, glowing summer.

Meditation might be the solution you search for to improve the quality of your sleep.

Meditating has become popular as a good way to relax since it helps you to calm your body and mind and so fosters inner peace. When done before bed, meditation may be especially helpful in promoting general serenity and so help to ease sleep problems.

Meditation for Better Sleep
Almost anyplace, without the need for specific tools, meditation is a habit one can engage in. All you require are some peaceful times and some patience. Establishing a regular meditation practice can help you appreciate its whole range of advantages even if it could take some time to become acclimated to.

Basic Steps of Meditation

Find a Quiet Space:
Choose a location where you can relax without interruptions. You can sit or lie down, depending on what feels more comfortable, especially before bed.

Close Your Eyes and Focus on Breathing:
Take deep, slow breaths. Pay attention to the rhythm of your inhalations and exhalations.

Let Thoughts Drift Away:
If your mind starts to wander, gently bring your focus back to your breath without judgment.

Start Small:
Begin with 3 to 5 minutes of meditation each night. Gradually increase this time to 15 to 20 minutes as you become more comfortable with the practice.

Effective Meditation Techniques for Sleep
Several meditation techniques are particularly effective for improving sleep. Each method offers unique benefits and can be tailored to fit your personal preferences.

Mindfulness Meditation
Mindfulness meditation works on keeping present and conscious of your ideas, emotions, and physical sensations. The technique is seeing ideas and feelings free from judgment and then allowing them pass. This method can help you control worry and tension, therefore producing a more relaxed condition fit for sleep.

Guided Meditation
Guided meditation is listening to a recorded guide walk you through the meditating process. This tutorial could assist with visualizations, breathing exercises, or relaxation strategies. Guided meditations abound on several platforms:

Image: Cozy and Calm Path to Restful Nights

Body Scan Meditation
You pay attention to every part of your body during body scan meditation, from your head to your toes. The goal is to become more aware of how your body feels, especially in places where you might be tense or uncomfortable. Putting your attention on your body can help you rest and fall asleep more easily.

How Meditation Promotes Better Sleep
Several changes in the body happen during meditation that can help you sleep. Research backs up its usefulness by showing that mindfulness meditation makes sleep much better. A 2018 review of 18 trials showed that meditation calms the body by lowering emotional reactivity and thoughts that go over and over again. This can help people sleep better.

Benefits of Meditation on Sleep Include:

Increased Melatonin Production: Melatonin is a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles.

Enhanced Serotonin Levels: Serotonin is a precursor to melatonin and plays a role in mood and sleep.

Reduced Heart Rate and Blood Pressure: Lower heart rate and blood pressure can signal to your body that it’s time to relax.

Activated Sleep-Control Centers in the Brain: Meditation can stimulate brain areas involved in regulating sleep.

Additional Benefits of Regular Meditation
Aside from improving sleep, regular meditation can offer a wide range of wellness benefits:

Improved Mood:
Meditation helps enhance emotional stability.

Stress Relief:
It can significantly reduce stress levels.

Anxiety Reduction:
Regular practice helps manage and lower anxiety.

Increased Focus and Cognitive Function:
It enhances mental clarity and concentration.

Pain Management:
Meditation can alter your response to pain.

Better Heart Health:
It helps manage blood pressure and reduces inflammation.

Are There Any Risks?
Meditation is generally safe for most people, but there are some considerations. People who have had mental health problems in the past may have side effects like feeling more anxious, losing their identity, or having big mood changes. Most people who meditate don’t have these side effects, but if you’re worried, you should talk to your doctor before you start.

Conclusion
One effective approach to help you sleep better and generally feel better is including meditation into your evening schedule. Meditation lowers tension and promotes relaxation, therefore creating an environment fit for peaceful sleep. Using several methods can help you to choose the one that best fits your tastes and demands.

Whether you choose body scan methods, guided sessions, or mindfulness meditation, consistency is important. Start small, be patient, then progressively extend your practice time. Along with improved sleep, you can discover many other wellness advantages as you adopt meditation. Including meditation into your wellness program could be the change you need to get more peaceful evenings and improved general health. Accept this discipline and savor the peace and renewal it offers for your life.

Image: Early Signs of Sun Overexposure

Latest health news often highlights the dangers of prolonged sun exposure, but despite widespread awareness, many people still find themselves suffering from severe sunburns. Sun poisoning is a term used to describe an extreme sunburn that goes beyond the typical redness and discomfort. If you’ve ever found yourself asking, “Have I been out in the sun too long?” this post is for you.

Understanding Sun Poisoning
Sun poisoning doesn’t mean you’ve been poisoned by the sun. Instead, it refers to a severe sunburn that can cause a range of distressing symptoms. This condition typically results from extended periods in the sun without adequate protection. Those with certain risk factors, such as fair skin, pre-existing skin conditions, or taking medications that increase sun sensitivity, are more susceptible.

Symptoms of Sun Poisoning
Sunburn symptoms vary in severity. Mild sunburns usually cause redness, pain, and skin that feels hot to the touch, which typically fade within a few days. Sun poisoning symptoms, however, are more intense and longer-lasting. These can include:

Blisters: Indicating a second-degree burn, blisters can lead to severe complications like dehydration and infection.

Severe pain and swelling

Fever, chills, headache, nausea, and vomiting

Sun-damaged skin changes that persist after the initial burn heals

Who Is at Risk?
Sun poisoning can affect anyone, but certain groups are more vulnerable:

Fair-skinned individuals: They have less melanin, making them more prone to burns.

Babies and children: Their skin is more sensitive.

People with skin conditions or those taking sun-sensitizing medications, such as certain antibiotics and blood pressure drugs.

Individuals in high UV exposure areas: Living closer to the equator or at higher altitudes increases risk.

Your lifestyle can also increase your risk. Spending time outdoors between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest, not using sunscreen or protective clothing, and using tanning beds all heighten the chance of sun poisoning.

Self-Treatment for Sun Poisoning
Most sun poisoning cases can be managed at home. Here’s how:

Cool Compresses and Aloe Vera: Apply to soothe the skin.

Non-fragranced creams or colloidal oatmeal baths: These can help with discomfort.

Over-the-counter pain relief: Medications like ibuprofen can reduce pain and swelling.

Inside Image: Preventing Sun Poisoning at the Beach

Hydration: Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.
If blisters form, it’s crucial to handle them properly:

Clean the area with soap and lukewarm water.

Avoid popping blisters. If they rupture, cover them with petrolatum jelly.

Do not apply corticosteroids like cortisone to the skin, as this can delay healing.

When to See a Doctor
Severe sunburns can lead to significant complications. Seek medical attention if you experience:

Bright red, oozing skin

Severe pain

Fever

Extreme chills or shivering

Headache, nausea, or vomiting

If you have a history of severe sunburns, consider regular screenings for skin cancer. Sunburns increase your risk for melanoma and other skin cancers.

Medical Treatment for Sun Poisoning
Doctors can offer various treatments to manage sun poisoning symptoms:

Pain and fever medications

Antibacterial wound creams or oral antibiotics for infections

Intravenous fluids for severe dehydration

In extreme cases, treatment in a burn or wound center may be necessary.

Tips for Protecting Yourself Against Sun Poisoning
Preventing sun poisoning involves more than just slathering on sunscreen. Here are comprehensive tips to safeguard your skin:

Wear protective clothing:
Broad-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants with a UPF rating of 50 offer the best protection.

Seek shade:
Especially during peak sun hours.

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen:
This protects against UVA and UVB rays. Choose an SPF of 30 or higher.

Apply sunscreen correctly:
At least 15 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours, or more often if sweating or swimming.

Protect your eyes and lips:
Wear sunglasses with UV protection and use lip balm with SPF 30 or higher.

Avoid tanning beds:
They expose your skin to harmful UV radiation.

Conclusion
Understanding and preventing sun poisoning is crucial for maintaining healthy skin. By taking the right precautions, you can enjoy the sun safely without suffering from severe burns. Always stay updated with the latest health news, and consider emerging research and innovative treatments to protect your skin. Whether you’re a fan of popular wellness trends or follow fitness influencers, remember that proper sun care is essential. Avoid the pitfalls of controversial health topics and prioritize your skin health to prevent sun poisoning and its severe consequences.

Image: Compassionate Dementia Care

Months after actor and comedian Robin Williams took his own life in August 2014, autopsy results revealed he had a devastating disease: Lewy body dementia (LBD). Unlike Alzheimer’s disease and even frontotemporal dementia, this brain disorder has tended to hide in the shadows. But work is underway to change that, says Dr. Stephen Gomperts, an assistant professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and director of the Lewy Body Dementia Unit at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital.

Perhaps surprisingly, LBD is the second most common cause of neurodegenerative dementia after Alzheimer’s disease. How do its symptoms differ? Who is at risk? And how is it diagnosed and treated?

Understanding Lewy Body Dementia
First, it’s important to know that there are two main types of dementia. One is called dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). A second type, known as Parkinson’s disease dementia (PDD), may arise late in the course of that illness.

These disorders stem from an abnormal buildup of protein deposits in the brain called Lewy bodies. The deposits, formed from a protein called alpha-synuclein, settle in brain areas affecting thinking, behavior, perception, and movement.

Much like Alzheimer’s disease, LBD is progressive and ultimately fatal. But while the median lifespan of people who have this illness is seven years, there is a high degree of variation in the duration of the disease, says Dr. Gomperts. “Many people respond well to medicines that aim to improve their ability to function and quality of life,” he notes.

Prevalence of Lewy Body Dementia
More than a million Americans live with Lewy body dementia. Others who likely have the disease may not have sought care or have been misdiagnosed, Dr. Gomperts says. “In the past, LBD was often subsumed under the general umbrella of ‘dementia’ or ‘Alzheimer’s.’ It’s still significantly underdiagnosed, but that’s getting better.”

Most people with LBD develop symptoms after age 50, so the numbers are likely to grow as the population con0tinues to age.

Similarities with Alzheimer’s Disease
As with Alzheimer’s, LBD affects a person’s ability to think clearly, remember details, solve problems, focus on tasks, and eventually care for themselves. “Gradually progressive trouble with thinking is the key shared feature between the two. This initially doesn’t impact activities of daily living, but ultimately it does,” he explains.

Differences from Alzheimer’s Disease
In Alzheimer’s disease, memory problems usually occur early and are the dominant problem. In contrast, in LBD, difficulties with problem-solving or spatial issues tend to arise before memory difficulties. These symptoms can occur first or in combination, and they may fluctuate. Perception is often affected, which can manifest as visual hallucinations. Delusions (false beliefs) are also common as the disease progresses.

“Whereas hallucinations and delusions are common late in the course of Alzheimer’s disease, visual hallucinations often arise early in LBD. For example, a person with LBD might see people or animals that aren’t there,” he says. “Such hallucinations are only rarely perceived as threatening.”

Unique Symptoms of LBD

Acting Out Dreams:
People with LBD may act out their dreams. Known as REM sleep behavioral disorder, this problem often arises even before thinking problems start.

Changes in Movement:
People with Lewy body dementia often move slowly and stiffly, developing tremors and gait changes, and becoming prone to falls. When people have PDD, progressive movement problems arise early and are the rule, leading to the initial diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. In DLB, movementjus is often but not always affected.

Image: Comforting Moments for Dementia

Distinguishing Between PDD and DLB
It’s all in the timing of key symptoms. A “one-year rule” distinguishes each disorder:

PDD:
When someone diagnosed with Parkinson’s develops memory and thinking problems that impair activities of daily living more than a year after their movement problems arise, PDD is diagnosed.

DLB:
When cognitive problems arise earlier, or come without movement problems, dementia with Lewy bodies is diagnosed.

“But this one-year rule is somewhat arbitrary,” Dr. Gomperts says. “Increasingly we think of this as a spectrum of disease.”

Risk Factors for Lewy Body Dementia
Age is considered the biggest risk factor for the disease. Most cases have no known trigger, although a handful of gene mutations can predispose someone to LBD.

Several lifestyle factors such as diet, lack of exercise, and toxic exposures have been linked to Parkinson’s disease risk. However, little research has been done to examine whether these factors are linked to LBD. People who have suffered head trauma appear to develop LBD and Parkinson’s more often. Both conditions also disproportionately affect men. “We think that’s telling us something important, but it’s not yet clear what,” Dr. Gomperts says.

Diagnosis of Lewy Body Dementia
The diagnosis of DLB is made when key clinical features are present — trouble thinking, fluctuations in thinking, movement problems, and REM sleep behavioral disorder — in the absence of other causes. The diagnosis of PDD is made when dementia arises in Parkinson’s disease.

Diagnosing DLB is challenging because early symptoms are often confused with symptoms that arise in other brain or psychiatric disorders. Many people don’t receive an accurate diagnosis until their symptoms become more advanced, Dr. Gomperts says.

An array of tests and imaging exams is deployed to tease out LBD from other conditions that can trigger similar symptoms, such as Alzheimer’s disease, vascular disease, thyroid disorders, or vitamin B12 deficiency. “Not all cases are clear-cut and not all physicians are skilled at making the diagnosis,” he says. “Accuracy is also lower in early disease.”

Treatment Options for Lewy Body Dementia
Yes, although there’s no cure, treatments like medications, physical therapy, and counseling can help with specific symptoms of LBD, such as thinking problems, hallucinations, and sleep disturbances. LBD-related movement symptoms can also be treated with some medications used for Parkinson’s. This makes it easier to walk and do other activities.

“We’ve also learned that several medications can cause or worsen certain symptoms, such as confusion, delusions, hallucinations, and movement problems,” Dr. Gomperts says. “In fact, some medications that target hallucinations and delusions often worsen motor function and can even be fatal in LBD. They need to be avoided.”

Managing Lewy Body Dementia
Living with Lewy body dementia requires a comprehensive approach to manage symptoms and maintain quality of life. This includes:

Chronic Illness Management:
Regular consultations with healthcare providers to monitor and adjust treatments.

Mental Health Support:
Counseling and support groups can help patients and their families cope with the emotional impact of the disease.

Pain Management:
Addressing any discomfort or pain that can arise due to movement issues.

Patient Support Groups:
Joining support groups can provide a sense of community and shared experiences, which can be incredibly valuable.

Understanding Lewy body dementia and its impact is crucial for managing the disease effectively. By recognizing its unique symptoms and differences from other forms of dementia, you can seek appropriate care and support. Although challenging, living with LBD can be managed with the right medical resources, patient support groups, and a comprehensive treatment plan.

Why am I so bloated? Chances are, you’ve asked yourself this at some point. Bloating is incredibly common: nearly one in seven Americans reported experiencing it for a week, according to a 2023 study published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

That tight, full feeling of bloating can be uncomfortable, often accompanied by distension, where your abdomen swells in size. The good news is there’s a lot you can do with lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, to relieve these symptoms.

Causes and Triggers of Bloating
Bloating occurs when too much gas builds up in your abdomen. Here’s a quick look at some of the most common reasons for excess gas buildup and bloating:

Swallowing too much air:
Every time you eat or drink, you swallow some air. However, if you consume food or fluids very quickly, you may gulp down extra air, leading to bloating.

Certain foods:
Fruits, veggies, whole grains, and beans are all beneficial for you, but they can be harder for your gastrointestinal (GI) tract to digest. Vegetables like cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli contain the carbohydrate raffinose, which your body can’t break down until it reaches your colon, where bacteria digest it and release gas.

Food intolerance:
Some people are lactose intolerant, meaning they have trouble digesting the milk sugar lactose, causing bloating after consuming dairy products. Others have fructose intolerance, developing GI symptoms after eating foods high in fructose, a sugar found in fruits, honey, table sugar, and high-fructose corn syrup.

A slowing system:
As you age, your digestive system tends to slow down, causing gas to build up and trigger bloating.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO):
Some individuals have an overgrowth of bacteria in their small intestine, leading to symptoms like bloating, constipation, and diarrhea.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS):
Bloating is a common symptom of IBS, a condition characterized by chronic belly pain and altered bowel habits.

Most people experience bloating occasionally. But if it happens frequently, or if you have other symptoms like stomach pain, unexplained weight loss, or bloody stools, see your doctor. They’ll want to check for more serious conditions like inflammatory bowel disease or colon cancer.

Image: Addressing Bloating and Stomach Discomfort

Dietary Changes to Reduce Bloating
Making certain dietary tweaks can help reduce bloating:

Keep a diary:
For a few weeks, note what you eat, when you eat, and when you feel especially bloated. This may help you and your doctor identify problematic foods.

Remove or decrease quantities of key culprits:
Some top offenders for bloating include:

Carbonated beverages like soda and beer

Dairy products:
Consider switching to lactose-free milks or plant-based milks like almond milk

Sugar-free gum and candies:
They contain artificial sweeteners that can cause bloating beans

Fruits high in fructose such as apples, apricots, bananas, peaches, pears, and dried fruit

Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower

Consider a low-FODMAP diet:
If the above steps don’t help, you may want to consider this eating pattern, which avoids certain types of carbohydrates that are hard to digest. Since this diet can be very restrictive, it’s best to do it under the guidance of a nutritionist.

Mindful Eating Practices to Prevent Bloating
If you tend to eat quickly, you might find yourself bloated afterward. Eating fast can lead to swallowing air and overeating, both of which contribute to bloating. Practicing mindful eating can help:

Eat with chopsticks, or with your non-dominant hand:
This slows down your eating pace.

Chew your food 30 times per bite:
This helps in better digestion.

Eat in a screen-free zone:
Focus on your food without distractions from your phone, computer, or TV.

Plate your food:
Avoid eating directly from containers or serving dishes.

Eat sitting down:
This promotes better digestion.

Make your meal last at least 20 minutes:
Eating slowly reduces the risk of swallowing excess air and overeating.

Physical Activities to Keep Bloating at Bay
Staying active is beneficial for your brain, heart, and gut. According to a 2023 review published in the Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine, exercise — whether it’s walking, running, biking, swimming, or doing yoga — can help relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, including bloating. Exercise may also help relieve stress, which is linked to worsening bloating.

If you can’t fit in a regular workout, at least try to take a stroll after meals. A 2021 study found that people who took a 10-to-15-minute walk after eating reported less bloating.

Home Remedies for Bloating Relief
While there’s no magic way to instantly relieve gas, here are a few things you can try at home:

Cook with anise:
This herb has been shown to reduce bloating in people with IBS and dyspepsia.

Try over-the-counter medications:
Simethicone, found in products like Gas-X or Maalox Anti-Gas, helps break up gas bubbles. Other products, like CharcoCaps, contain activated charcoal. These may help with occasional bloating, but there’s no solid evidence any of them work consistently.

Incorporate Stress-Relief Practices
Stress can worsen bloating, so incorporating stress-relief practices into your routine can be beneficial. Consider activities like a 5-minute yoga flow for stress relief. Yoga not only helps in relaxing your mind but also aids in better digestion by stimulating your digestive system.

Conclusion
Bloating can be uncomfortable, but with the right lifestyle changes, you can manage and reduce its occurrence. By understanding the causes and triggers, making dietary adjustments, practicing mindful eating, staying active, and trying home remedies, you can find relief from bloating. If you have persistent or severe symptoms, it’s essential to consult your doctor to rule out any serious underlying conditions.

Remember, everyone’s body is different, so what works for one person may not work for another. Keep track of your symptoms and consult with healthcare professionals to find the best approach for you. With patience and persistence, you can reduce bloating and enjoy a more comfortable life.

When you think of heart-healthy diets, the Mediterranean diet often comes to mind. However, its lesser-known cousin, the Atlantic diet — also known as the Southern European Atlantic diet — deserves your attention too. Much like its Mediterranean counterpart, the Atlantic diet emphasizes plant-based foods, seafood, and healthy fats, but with its own unique twists.

What is the Atlantic Diet?
The Atlantic diet is rooted in the traditional eating habits of northern Portugal and northwest Spain. In these regions, life expectancy is high, and the incidence of cardiovascular disease is low. The diet focuses on a variety of plant-based foods, including vegetables, fruits, and whole grains; seafood; and healthy fats like olive oil. Unlike the Mediterranean diet, the Atlantic diet includes more seafood, dairy, lean meat, nuts, potatoes, and bread, while the Mediterranean diet features more pasta.

Why the Atlantic Diet is Beneficial
The health benefits of the Atlantic diet are impressive. Research from the GALIAT trial showed that families who followed the Atlantic diet for six months had a significant decrease in the risk of developing metabolic syndrome — a group of conditions that increase the likelihood of heart disease and diabetes — compared to a control group. The diet can also help reduce the risk of high blood pressure.

However, there’s one caveat: the Atlantic diet may be higher in saturated fat and cholesterol than the Mediterranean diet because it includes more red meat and dairy products. Despite this, the diet may be more appealing and sustainable for those who don’t want to significantly cut back on meat or dairy.

The Importance of Family and Mindfulness
Beyond the food, the Atlantic diet emphasizes the importance of family meals, daily physical activity, and mindfulness. Meals are often shared events, bringing together communities to enjoy freshly caught seafood and locally sourced produce in a mindful way. This focus on community and mindfulness can enhance your overall well-being.

Foods Included in the Atlantic Diet
The Atlantic diet features a wide variety of seasonal and local fruits and vegetables, such as cruciferous ones like cabbage and cauliflower, and starchy ones like potatoes. Lean proteins, including fish, seafood, and poultry, are staples, along with whole grains, legumes, and healthy fats like nuts. You can also enjoy moderate amounts of dairy, eggs, and red meat, while limiting highly processed, sugary, or saturated fat foods such as processed meats, refined grains, sweets, and sugary drinks.

5 Tips for Getting Started on the Atlantic Diet
If you’re ready to give the Atlantic diet a try, here are five tips to help you get started:

Add Plant-Based Foods to Each Meal and Snack
Focusing on nutritious foods you can add versus things to subtract can help keep a positive spin on making changes. If changing your main dish seems daunting, start by introducing a fruit, vegetable, legume, or whole grain as a side. Think about which meal doesn’t have as many plant-based options and start incorporating more into that one first. Try adding berries to your morning oatmeal, sliced almonds to your yogurt, a side salad or handful of shredded carrots to your sandwich, or switch to whole wheat bread to boost your fiber, vitamins, and minerals intake.

Stew Your Foods
One of the main ways of food preparation on the Atlantic diet is stewing, which preserves nutrients and tends to avoid the formation of harmful advanced glycation end products (AGEs) associated with high-heat cooking methods. AGEs are linked to heart disease, diabetes, inflammation, kidney disease, poor bone health, memory loss, and more. Slow cookers are a great appliance for stewing. If you’ve never stewed food before, choose a variety of ingredients such as seafood, lean meats, vegetables, and legumes. Use fresh herbs, spices, and aromatics to enhance the taste of your stew.

Have a Meatless Day
Pick one day a week to replace animal-based proteins with plant-based options, such as beans, legumes, and tofu. These substitutions help increase the amount of lean protein and fiber in meals while lowering the amount of saturated fat. Try swapping out ground meat for beans in chili or having a sandwich with mashed chickpea salad in place of chicken salad.

Choose Seasonal Fruit for Dessert
Having fruit as your main sweet treat cuts down on added sugar and boosts your fiber intake. Or have it as a snack, such as pairing fruit with protein-rich Greek yogurt and a drizzle of honey.

Eat with Others
Group meals are an important part of the Atlantic diet culture. This meal style stresses the importance of family meals, which have been shown to reduce the risk of suicide, depression, and risky behavior in adolescents. Rates of obesity also tend to be lower when parents enforce family meal time. Choose one meal and carve out at least 10 minutes to sit undistracted with family, friends, or roommates to socialize and enjoy your food together. Gradually build up the length of time and number of meals per week.
