Recently, the FDA issued a warning concerning certain eye drops brands such as South Moon, Rebright, and FivFivGo, cautioning consumers about potential risks of infection associated with these products. These eye drops, often considered copycats of Bausch + Lomb’s Lumify brand, have raised concerns due to their lack of FDA approval and the possibility of contamination.

Insights into the Copycat Eye Drops
The FDA highlighted South Moon, Rebright, and FivFivGo as brands that have not received FDA approval. While these products claim to alleviate glaucoma symptoms, it’s crucial to note that glaucoma is typically treated with surgery or prescription medications, not over-the-counter eye drops. Upon testing, South Moon eye drops were found to be contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia complex, a bacterium that can lead to untreatable infections. Although Rebright samples were not contaminated, the FDA still advises against their use due to safety concerns. Unfortunately, FivFivGo samples were not available for testing, adding to the uncertainty surrounding these products.

The Risks Associated with Copycat Eye Drops
Dr. Vicente Diaz from Yale School of Medicine emphasizes the potential risks associated with using copycat eye drops. These products are manufactured by smaller enterprises with less stringent regulations, raising concerns about manufacturing practices and sterility. The lack of proper regulation increases the risk of contamination, which can result in ocular and systemic infections. While the origin of these products remains unclear, the FDA continues its investigation into their safety and manufacturing processes.

FDA Recommendations and Consumer Safety
The FDA advises consumers to discard any South Moon, Rebright, or FivFivGo eye drops they may have. It’s essential to purchase eye products from reputable retailers, such as state-licensed pharmacies, to ensure product safety and quality. Additionally, consumers should exercise caution when buying eye drops online, as inaccurate information and counterfeit products pose significant risks to eye health.

Dr. Diaz recommends opting for reputable eye drop brands known for their safety and efficacy. For dry eye relief, leading brands like Refresh and Systane are recommended. When addressing eye redness, Lumify by Bausch & Lomb stands out as a trusted option, offering a brimonidine-based formula without known manufacturing issues. These recommendations aim to guide consumers towards reliable eye care products that prioritize safety and effectiveness.

Past Concerns and FDA Action
This recent warning from the FDA echoes past concerns over contaminated eye drops. In a previous drug safety alert, 27 over-the-counter eye drop brands were voluntarily recalled due to contamination concerns and their association with bacterial infections. These incidents highlight the importance of vigilant oversight and regulation in ensuring the safety of eye care products.

As consumers, it’s vital to prioritize eye health by being informed about potential risks associated with certain eye drop brands. By heeding the FDA’s warning and choosing reputable products from trusted retailers, individuals can safeguard their eye health and minimize the risk of adverse effects. Stay vigilant, stay informed, and prioritize safety when selecting eye care products for optimal eye health and well-being.
